Although the 1998 Cotes du Rhone Clos de l'Hermitage is austere, it possesses fine fruit, and an attractive, spicy, peppery, herbes de Provence and cherry-scented nose.

However, the dry tannin gives it a compressed, attenuated finish. If the tannin softens and becomes better integrated, this 1998 Cotes du Rhone should merit an 86-point score.
